1 PKI stands for "Public Key Infrastructure". In a PKI, a certification authority (CA) is used to deliver
identity credentials to subscribers. Each subscriber recieves a key pair(or key pairs)
Public Key - used to encrypt messages sent to the subscriber(anyone can access this key - also called certificate)
Private Key - used by the subscriber to decrypt messages encrypted with their public key (only the subscriber has access to this key)
2 X.509 is simply the accepted standard format for the subscriber's PKI certificate
3 S/MIME the word standard for Secure Mail. It is an extension of the MIME format, and is used by governments, financial institutions, and enterprise worldwide
